Loved ones mourns Paralympian Dory Selinger after fatal McKinney crash
Apr 16, 2026
A decorated cyclist and symbol of perseverance is being remembered after a routine morning ride turned tragic in McKinney.
Dory Selinger, a Paralympic champion and longtime cyclist, was killed in a crash involving a vehicle early in the morning near Alma Drive and the Sam Rayburn Tollway service ro
ad, according to McKinney police.
Selinger’s wife, Laura, said cycling was a daily part of his life, something he rarely missed.
She said she became alarmed just after 6 a.m. when she received an alert from his tracking device indicating he had been in an accident.
She rushed to the scene, not expecting the worst.
“I left right away, but I never never expect that he wouldn’t be alive,” Laura said.
Police said Selinger died at the scene.
Dory is now being remembered as a determined athlete, devoted husband and loving father.
Selinger was a three-time world champion who won gold at the 1996 Atlanta Paralympics and earned three more medals in Sydney in 2000.
Those who knew him say his accomplishments were defined by resilience.
“His perseverance is incredible. He got through so much. He accomplished so much. I want to be like him in that way,” Laura said.
Selinger’s journey included overcoming a devastating crash in 1993 that killed his teammate and left him with severe injuries, including the loss of part of his right leg.
Friends say he continued to push forward, achieving success despite those challenges.
“He overcame so many so many challenges in his life, and he always won,” Laura said.
Jim Davis, who rode in the same cycling group as Selinger, said the loss is especially difficult.
He noted this is the second cyclist the group has lost in just one month.
“So for us to lose 2 people in the span of a month is crushing,” Davis said.
Davis and others hope the tragedy leads to safer habits for drivers sharing the road with cyclists.
For Selinger’s family, the focus now is on grief and the sudden loss of a loved one.
“How do you go from seeing someone every day to never again?” Laura asked.
Selinger is being remembered not only for his athletic achievements, but for the impact he had on those closest to him — a husband and father taken far too soon.
