CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- A community is coming together to support the baby daughter of a woman shot and killed in Chesterfield on Monday, April 13. Loved ones said 28-year-old Barbie Perez left behind her 3-month-old daughter Dream, and since Perez's death, donations and support for her family have poured in from across the community. In just three days since her death, more than $17k has been donated to a GoFundMe to support Dream and Perez's funeral expenses. Formula, diapers and toys have been left for at Jefferson Motors in North Chesterfield, which is acting as a drop-off point for physical donations. Jovanna Evans, a close friend of Perez, said she is in disbelief at the amount of support. She said she's also in disbelief that her friend is truly gone. "She just was crying, and she was just like, 'Barbie's gone,'" Evans said. "And I'm like, Barbie's gone? Like, what are you talking about? And she's like, 'she's gone. She's like, he shot her.'” Chesterfield Police responded to Shady Creek Road around six that evening for a report of an assault with a deadly weapon. A witness told 8News they heard ten shots ring out. Police found Perez there, shot. She was pronounced dead on the scene. They later arrested Javonte Blackston and charged him with second-degree murder. Investigators said it was a domestic dispute. Evans said Blackston is Dream's father. "It just hurts that, you know, Dream, I'll be able to see," Evans said. "But Dream won't be able to, she won't be able to grow up with her mom and she did not deserve that." This was so unexpected. And we want to make sure Baby Dream has everything that she can have," Evans said. Jefferson Motors at 9927 US-1 in North Chesterfield has been accepting donations on the family's behalf. “A lot of people with good hearts came to help her," said owner Eugene Arce, which 8News translated from Spanish to English. "And a lot of people from all walks of life have come on the first day to help, to donate, including cash, and that’s incredible." While the family is figuring out what comes next, Evans is cherishing her last memories with Perez, just two days before her death. "I'm just happy I told her I love her and gave her that hug," Evans said. "That I was able to spend some of her last moments with her." ...read more read less
