A man known across Denton for dressing as Spider-Man to bring joy to children is now facing a different kind of challenge after a serious medical emergency. Jeremy Sons, who runs the Clear Creek Adventure Ranch Rescue and Education Farm, was recently hospitalized with a life-threatening condition . “I was septic and I was pretty close, pretty close… to being out of the game and they were rushing me in for emergency surgery, and I have surgery coming up again next week,” Sons said. Outside of his superhero persona, Sons and his wife care for animals at their nonprofit rescue, often taking in animals in critical condition. “We like to say if there’s a 1% chance, well, that’s enough,” he said. Sons began dressing as Spider-Man during the COVID-19 pandemic, initially to lift spirits while running errands. The role quickly expanded into appearances at children’s birthday parties and hospital visits, with proceeds supporting the rescue. “I put a Spider-Man suit on to just do some grocery shopping to make some people smile. And from that, it turned into just this amazing thing where I was able to just give, give, give,” Sons said. He also traveled to Uvalde after the school shooting, handing out teddy bears to children. “Just Spider-Man showing up and just making those memories and going to the hospital when a kid needs encouragement. It’s been a life-changing experience to say the least,” he said. Now, Sons said he is facing more than $80,000 in medical bills and does not have insurance. “I mean, I’m thankful for my health. I am so thankful. But the amount of debt that puts on a person that doesn’t have insurance is, I don’t know,” he said. At the urging of community members, Sons started an online fundraiser to help cover the costs. He said the response has been overwhelming. “I just wanna thank anybody and everybody that just has reached out and just showed me and my family love. It means more to me than you know,” he said. Sons said he is encouraged by the support from the same community he has worked to serve. “I believe whatever you put out in the world is what you get back,” he said. ...read more read less
