MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. (KRON) -- Eleven people were displaced from their homes after a fire at an apartment building Saturday afternoon including five children and six adults, according to the Mountain View Fire Department. Just before 4 p.m., fire fighters responded to reports of a fire in two seco nd-story units of a multi-family apartment complex in the 1900 block of California Street. The residents self-evacuated before officers got there, officials said. Officials said crews had to rip out the walls and the ceiling of two adjoining kitchens to make sure the flames were completely extinguished. Fire fighters reported flames spread from underneath a sink into the attic. Crews were able to extinguish the fire without any injuries. Investigators determined the fire to be accidental due to a renovation mishap. Due to fire, smoke and water damage, the residents were temporarily misplaced. Damage to the property was estimated to be about $200,000. The building was turned over to the property manager before fire crews left the scene. By following a few safety tips, you can protect your family from fire while performing residential renovations: Install alarms in every sleeping room, outside each sleeping area, and on every level. Use qualified electricians, avoid extension cords as permanent wiring, and ensure proper installation of appliances. Surround foam insulation with a 4-inch fireproof barrier. ...read more read less
