A woman was rushed to the hospital early Saturday morning after she was rescued from a house fire in Parchester neighborhood of The Bronx, the New York City Fire Department said. The fire sparked overnight with large flames that shot into the dark sky. The unidentified woman is at Jacobi Hospita l in critical condition. The fire also left several families out of their home for now. The fire broke out around 3:30 A.M in a second floor apartment. The rescued woman lived in that unit and was trapped inside. Other tenants say that they ran up to the floor, banging on people’s doors to try to help. After firefighters freed her, neighbors watched as EMS personnel performed CPR before she was taken to Jacobi. Many of the tenants in the six apartments have lived there for decades and know each other. They say they try to take care of each other. “My son heard some noise, it sounded like crackling,” said a woman who identified herself only as “Esperanza.” “So at first, I thought, maybe was somebody was arguing, or fighting. So when we ran to the back of the house, all we seen was like this orange flame, ” the 33-year-resident of the neighborhood told NBC New York. “I had one of my neighbors from the second floor lend me her phone to call the fire department. But they were already on their way, because some people already had heard it. It was incredible like that. I don’t even know what to say. It was just so much,” she added. News 4 also heard from several tenants who said they shared concerns with the landlord for many years about the condition of the apartment where that fire broke out. They say the older woman who lived there and was seriously hurt in the fire had many candles in the apartment. She would get locked out of her apartment, those neighbors said, and they were concerned that she couldn’t fully take care of herself. The landlord spoke with News 4 off-camera. He called the fire “extremely sad,” adding “that woman is a good person. There were complaints.” He said he tried to talk to her many times. Fire investigators spent Saturday morning inside the apartments, checking things out as they begin looking into what started the fire. The American Red Cross provided eight families with assistance such as emergency housing and financial aid. ...read more read less
