A 20-year-old man was arrested Friday on suspicion of throwing a Molotov cocktail at OpenAI CEO Sam Altman’s San Francisco home and making threats at the company’s headquarters, according to police and the company.
“Thankfully, no one was hurt,” OpenAI said in a statement. “We deeply ap
preciate how quickly SFPD responded and the support from the city in helping keep our employees safe. The individual is in custody, and we’re assisting law enforcement with their investigation.”
Police said the man allegedly threw an “incendiary destructive device” at a home in North Beach in the 4 a.m. hour, sparking a fire at an exterior gate. The man then fled the scene on foot.
The man’s description was sent to all officers, police said. Just after 5 a.m., officers responded to a business on the 1400 block of Third Street to investigate reports of an unknown male threatening to burn down the building.
Responding officers said the unknown male matched the description of the suspect from the fire at the North Beach home. Officers immediately took the man into custody, police said.
Charges were still pending as of late Friday morning, according to police.
An investigation is underway. Anyone with information about the case is asked to contact San Francisco police at 415-575-4444.
