With the state Democratic and Republican conventions just over a month away, nearly 80 New Haveners have been invited to attend and vote for who they think should get their party’s endorsement for governor, among other statewide offices. In March, New Haven’s Republican and Democratic Town Co mmittees selected the delegates for their respective state conventions. Those state conventions will be where party members vote to endorse candidates for statewide office, including for governor, lieutenant governor, attorney general, secretary of the state, treasurer, and comptroller. The Republican state convention will take place on May 15 and May 16 at Mohegan Sun in Uncasville; the Democratic state convention will take place on May 16 in at the Bushnell Center for Performing Arts in Hartford. In the gubernatorial race, Democratic incumbent Gov. Ned Lamont faces a challenge from progressive Democratic Hamden State Rep. Josh Elliott. Republican challengers in the race include Greenwich State Sen. Ryan Fazio, former New Britain Mayor Erin Stewart, and former New York Lt. Gov. Betsy McCaughey. Each party’s endorsee has to receive a majority of votes in order to secure the nomination. Candidates who receive 15 percent of votes will have a spot on the primary ballot.
