Virginia state troopers flown to hospital after SUV flips during training in Nottoway

NOTTOWAY COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- Two Virginia state troopers, including a student trooper, are in the hospital after that student flipped an SUV during a training exercise on Thursday.
At about 10:15 a.m. on Thursday, April 9, a student trooper and instructor with Virginia State Police were involved
in a crash at the Virginia State Police Driver Training Complex in the Blackstone area of Nottoway County.
Per state police, a Ford SUV driven by the student trooper flipped during training. Both the student and the instructor accompanying them were hurt in the crash.
The two troopers were flown to an area hospital via MedFlight helicopter.

"At this time, both are reported to be in stable condition and are expected to make a full recovery," state police said.
Virginia State Police is reviewing this incident. No additional information, such as the potential cause of the crash, is available as of the time of reporting.
The Virginia State Police Driver Training Complex is a "controlled training environment designed to safely simulate real-world driving conditions while testing the capabilities of both the trainee and the vehicle," according to state police. Training scenarios are conducted on its 1.5-mile track, "with limited vehicles on the course at one time."
"During all training exercises, troopers are required to wear seatbelts, eye protection and helmets," state police said. "These measures, along with the controlled setting, are in place to reduce risk while allowing troopers to safely train and prepare for the demands of the job."
