Gov. Phil Scott on Thursday appointed former Sen. David Soucy of Barre Town to the House seat recently vacated by longtime Rep. Topper McFaun.
Soucy, a Republican, previously served in the Senate, representing Rutland County during the 2017-18 legislative session.
He was elected to the Barre Town Selectboard last year.
Scott, in a press release, said Soucy “has been involved in his community for many years and will be a strong voice for common-sense legislation” in the Statehouse.
Soucy did not immediately respond to a voicemail seeking comment, but said in a release that he was “honored” to be appointed and represent residents of Barre Town and Williamstown.
“I understand the serious challenges limiting Vermont’s growth and the impact they have on our residents,” he said in the release. “I will work collaboratively with fellow legislators to lessen the burden of high taxes, the high cost of development, and the alarming cost of education, especially in light of disappointing outcomes.”
Soucy replaced McFaun, a Barre Town Republican who announced his resignation in March to focus on family responsibilities. He resigned the seat on April 3.
McFaun served in the House for more than two decades, first winning election in 2004. Most recently, he served as vice chair of the House Health Care Committee.
Scott, in his release, thanked McFaun “for all he’s done throughout the years to make Vermont a better place for his constituents.”
Soucy, likewise, said he was honored to follow in McFaun’s footsteps.
“Topper is a true public servant who always put the interests of his constituents — and all Vermonters — first,” he said.
