‘Nobody else is going to save you’: Richmonders push for peace overseas amid U.S.Iran conflict

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- On Tuesday, the United States, Israel and Iran reached a temporary, two-week ceasefire. Less than 24 hours later, that agreement appeared at risk of unraveling.
Dozens of Richmond residents gathered at Maggie Walker Memorial Plaza on Wednesday, April 8, pushing for an end to
the war in Iran.
"How many more innocent children have to die?" one demonstrator asked.
The escalation came as Israeli strikes in Lebanon killed more than 180 people, putting the fragile ceasefire in jeopardy.
"It’s horrifying, but it’s not surprising," another protester said. "We’ve seen Israel and America break ceasefires all the time and this will only be an illusion of peace to people in the United States."

The U.S., Iran, and Israel remain at odds over what the ceasefire actually included. In response to ongoing tensions, Iran has once again closed the Strait of Hormuz as of Wednesday.
Many Richmonders said their concerns go beyond economic impacts.

"We worry about gas prices and cost of living ... and it’s good to worry about that ... but it says a lot when we worry about that more than the flesh and blood of humans," a protester said.
International war experts have noted the difficulty of predicting what might happen next, especially as much of the communication unfolds online between foreign leaders. Still, local advocates said the work here at home cannot wait.
"Nobody else is going to save you ... nobody else is going to do this,” one activist said. “We have to remain steadfast, to keep fighting here at home, to keep organizing and building collective power."
Officials from the United States and Israel are scheduled to meet in Pakistan as soon as Friday, April 10 to discuss a permanent end to the war. Protesters said their fight is far from over.
