Flying anytime soon? You may want to make the most of your carry-on item.
The cost of checking in luggage on your flight is going up by $10 on average. Increases in bag fees are impacting multiple airlines so far, with Delta being the latest to join United, JetBlue and Southwest.
“It’s n
ot surprising with inflation,” traveler Amy Fairless told News 4. “And the economy right now, but it still sucks for the consumer.”
Delta is now charging $45 for the first checked bag. That’s ten dollars more. A second bag will cost $55. And a third will now set you back $200.
United recently raised its rates as well, with the new fee for a first checked bag jumping up by $10 to $50. A second checked bag costs $60. However, there is a $5 discount if you prepay 24 hours before your flight.
JetBlue saw a $9 increase to $49 for the first bag and $69 for the second.
“I don’t like it, but I’m not gonna personally be affected too much because my bags are usually free,” traveler Artem Kazakov said.
Kazakov uses a credit card benefit to cover the cost of checked bags. For some frequent flyer levels, certain higher fares can cover the cost of bags.
And while those airline fees are going up, drivers hope gas prices will go down, as they now are averaging $4.16 nationwide, according to AAA. Crude oil was at $95 a barrel on Wednesday, the lowest in a month, but uncertainty remains over the important Strait of Hormuz.
“As long as the ceasefire is in place, it’ll probably drop the price a little bit,” Artie Campbell said. “But who knows, it may pick up again.”
