A dog owner in San Jose found dozens of treats at a park that she says smelled like insecticide spray, which can be toxic for pets.
Michelle Nguyen said she was walking with her husband, toddler and two dogs at Berryessa Creek Park on Saturday afternoon when she came across a suspicious pile of t
reats.
“[My dog’s] trying to go for something,” Nguyen said. “He’s lunging for something, which is a little unusual. There are treats on the ground, these Milk Bones there.”
Nguyen decided to pick them up with a waste bag and said they smelled like Raid spray.
“As I’m walking I see even more,” Nguyen said.
She said eventually she found an empty container of Milk Bones behind a tree. She decided to pick up all of the treats she could find.
“By the time I was done, the glove I was using to pick up absolutely reeked,” she said. “It was giving me a headache.”
City of San Jose Animal Care and Services said it picked up the treats from Nguyen to ensure they were properly disposed of, adding, “The exact nature of the treats remains unknown. Out of an abundance of caution, we encourage the public to remain mindful when visiting parks and other public spaces, and to avoid allowing pets to consume unknown items or treats found on the ground.”
The San Jose Public Works Department told NBC Bay Area on Tuesday said there was nothing poisonous or toxic on the treats after an examination. The department added the treats were old.
Veterinarian Dr. Tal Solomon said he’s seen cases like this before.
“I would actually stay away from the dog treats 100%,” he said. “There’s always some bad people out there. Pull the dogs away. Get as far away as you can.”
He said if a pet consumes something that is toxic, pet owners should watch out for symptoms like excessive drooling, vomiting or diarrhea and take them to the emergency vet.
