Free gun locks, storage containers for meds available during Child Abuse Prevention month

Louisville is giving away free gun locks and medication safe storage containers in honor of Child Abuse Prevention Month, which is recognized in April.

ay, April 17, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Rallying to prevent child abuse, KY leaders urge drug storage, internet safety
The city has about 300 gun locks to give away, paid for by Office of Violence Prevention general fund dollars, according to a spokesman. It’s not yet clear how many medication storage containers the city will have available.
“Every child deserves to live in a safe and healthy environment,” Mayor Craig Greenberg said in a statement. “This is a practical step to help families to safely store firearms and medications, two of the most common sources of preventable injuries and deaths among children.”
Child abuse prevention experts emphasize the importance of safely storing weapons and medication so children cannot access those items and harm themselves or others.
Over the last five years, the rate of Kentucky children overdosing on unsafe substances like cannabinoids and fentanyl increased by more than 100%. In the 2024 fiscal year, 11 Kentucky children died from ingestions and overdoses and nine children died from firearm injuries.
