HALF MOON BAY, Calif. (KRON) -- A 53-year-old man suspected of a dozen cases of copper cable thefts across the Peninsula has pleaded not guilty to all charges. Eleven reported copper cable thefts occurred between Feb. 1 and March 18 in Half Moon Bay, La Honda, Portola Valley and Woodside. The thief took approximately 2,800 feet of copper wire from telecommunications infrastructure, the San Mateo County Sheriff's Office said, which was valued at more than $225,000. An additional copper wire theft occurred in the early morning hours of March 23 in Woodside. Investigators using automated license plate reader cameras identified a suspect vehicle in the case and tracked it to a scrap metal facility where the cable was being sold, the sheriff’s office said. “Through cooperation from the facility, the Sheriff’s Office identified the suspect as 53-year-old Michael Galbreath of Union City,” SMCSO wrote. Galbreath was located in his vehicle the following day in South San Francisco and arrested by deputies. “A search of the vehicle revealed additional copper cable, evidence, illegal drugs, drug paraphernalia and ammunition,” the sheriff’s office wrote. “Galbreath, who is a convicted felon, is prohibited from possessing ammunition.” Galbreath was charged by the San Mateo County District Attorney’s Office with grand theft of copper materials, possession of ammunition, possession for sale of a controlled substance, transportation of a controlled substance, possession of burglar’s tools and possession of drug paraphernalia. He pleaded not guilty to all charges on March 26 and was released from custody under his own recognizance. The next court date in the case is set for April 15. ...read more read less
