A San Francisco jury found a 44-year-old man guilty of attacking and sexually assaulting multiple women while posing as a ride-hailing driver, the district attorney’s office announced Friday.
Orlando Vilchez Lazo would pick up women waiting for their ride-hailing driver after leaving bars and n
ightclubs and take them to remote and secluded areas to rape them, the district attorney’s office said, citing testimony and evidence presented at trial. The attacks happened between 2013 and 2018, and the victims were either 21 or 22 years old.
Vilchez Lazo was convicted of 11 felony counts: two counts of kidnapping with intent to commit rape, three counts of kidnapping, four counts of rape by force/fear and two counts of sexual penetration with a foreign object, according to the district attorney’s office.
“Justice has finally been served,” District Attorney Brooke Jenkins said in a statement. “Mr. Vilchez Lazo is now being held accountable for these heinous crimes. I would like to thank the jury for their service on this trial, the San Francisco Police Department for their thorough investigation and the survivors for their courage and trust in my office to get them justice. Let this conviction serve as a reminder to those who think they can outrun justice; my office will be relentless in our pursuit and never stop fighting for victims and survivors of crime.”
Vilchez Lazo, who is currently in custody, faces more than 100 years to life in state prison, the district attorney’s office said. His sentencing will be determined at a future hearing.
