BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (WISH) — Indiana State Police detectives are investigating the death of an inmate who was found unresponsive Friday at the Monroe County Correctional Center.
Antonio M. Davis, 48, was pronounced dead after lifesaving measures at the facility were unsuccessful, the state po
lice said in a news release.
The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office requested the state police investigation to provide an independent review of the incident. Sheriff Ruben Marte initiated the request early Friday morning to ensure agency transparency following the discovery of Davis in his cell.
Davis was found unresponsive in his bed at approximately 12:40 a.m. Friday. An autopsy was to be scheduled to determine the cause of death.
The release did not say for what reason Davis was in the jail.
Indiana has recorded the deaths of 1,194 inmates in custody since 2019, with 134 of those in 2025. The tallies may include people who are detained, arrested, en route to incarceration, or incarcerated in state or local facilities, or a boot camp prison.
