A 41-year-old woman has been arrested for her alleged involvement in dumping a body in the Browns Canyon area, but authorities say they’re still searching for a second individual who they believe killed the victim. Summit County Sheriff’s Office detectives responded to the intersection of Br owns Canyon Road and Highview Road last week after the department received reports of human remains covered in blood. Investigators found a deceased adult man who had a traumatic wound to his forehead, and evidence on scene suggested the man had been dragged to the location from the roadway, according to court documents. The Sheriff’s Office obtained surveillance footage of the area from a nearby building and saw a vehicle arrive at the intersection around 2 a.m. The video showed “an unknown number of individuals” removing the deceased man’s body from the car and leaving it on the side of the road before fleeing. A preliminary autopsy indicated the man had died from blunt force trauma to his skull and brain. Detectives identified the man through his fingerprints and called his family members, who live in North Carolina, on Wednesday. “While speaking with family members, investigators were advised that the victim’s wife, who lives in Utah, had contacted them and advised them the victim was fine and they should not be worried about his welfare,” court documents said. The family members told the wife they were in contact with law enforcement, who reported the man had died. The wife then “quickly hung up the phone.” Investigators identified Reina Chavez Sandobal as the man’s wife and detained her at her home in Midvale. Sandobal, in an interview, claimed her husband had become “physically abusive with her and had attempted to sexually assault her.” Sandobal said she contacted her boyfriend, Francisco Morales, and told him about the reported abuse. Morales then allegedly responded to her home and assaulted the man as he slept, and Sandobal said she could not locate a pulse afterwards. The two allegedly loaded the man into Sandobal’s car and drove him to the location where his remains were found, according to court documents. “Ms. Chavez Sandobal went on to tell me where a blanket that was covered in the victim’s blood had been concealed within her apartment,” investigators said in a probable cause statement. “Ms. Chavez Sandobal then described where a hammer, which is believed to be the murder weapon, had been concealed within her residence. Both of these items were later recovered in the locations Ms. Chavez Sandobal had described.” Sandobal was arrested for the abuse or desecration of a deceased human body and for the obstruction of justice, both of which are felonies. She is not an American citizen and is currently being held in the Summit County Jail without bond, with deputies claiming it is “highly likely” she would flee the state or country if she were released. The whereabouts of Morales are unknown, but the Sheriff’s Office is working to locate him.
