A child was shot in the head in what police are investigating as a possible accidental shooting inside a home in Philadelphia.
According to police, the incident happened on the 2100 block of S. 26th St. in the city’s Greys Ferry neighborhood on the second floor of a residence.
Police said
a 3-year-old boy had been shot in the head and transported to a nearby hospital by family members. The child remains in critical condition.
Preliminary information suggests the shooting may have been accidental, but the investigation is ongoing, according to police. The weapon was not recovered; only a magazine was found.
Police said several people, including teens, were inside the home during the shooting. They provided conflicting statements, and some were non-cooperative.
Five individuals were taken to the police headquarters for further questioning. Police said no arrests have been made at this time.
Police emphasize that guns should be secured away from children using safes, lock boxes, or trigger locks to prevent accidental shootings.
