INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — The University of Indianapolis is marking a milestone in its live mascot program as Grady the Greyhound prepares to transition to emeritus status.
The celebration coincides with National Adopt-A-Greyhound Month and the upcoming third birthday
of the program’s newest mascot, Grady II.
Coran Sigman, a university alum and the program’s handler, oversees both dogs. Grady and Grady II are adopted former racing greyhounds that serve as a source of connection and comfort for students.
The live mascot program was re-established about 6 1/2 years ago, after the university went nearly four decades without one. Sigman said the school partnered with a greyhound adoption group to bring Grady to campus from a racetrack in 2019.
Grady turned 9 on April 1 and is scheduled to “graduate” during the university’s commencement ceremony in May. At that time, he will be named Mascot Emeritus, a designation approved by the university’s board that allows him to remain involved in events as needed.
Grady II joined the campus community in October as part of a transition period and will turn 3 on April 16. He was brought to Indiana from New South Wales, Australia, and is being introduced gradually before taking over mascot duties full-time.
Sigman said the breed’s temperament often surprises people, describing greyhounds as calm and well-suited for home environments despite their racing backgrounds.
In addition to appearances at athletic and campus events, the dogs also serve as a mental health resource for students, faculty, and staff. Sigman said their presence can help reduce stress, particularly during high-pressure times such as finals week.
Grady is expected to officially assume emeritus status during the May commencement ceremony. After retirement, he will live with Sigman as a family pet.
