A man and woman who were involved in a fatal crash in National City over the weekend were identified by the county medical examiner’s office. Ignacio Pedroza, 60, and his wife, Monica Pedroza, 53, of Chula Vista were killed when a suspected DUI rear-ended their Jeep on Sunday, sending it into t he Sweetwater River, authorities said. For reasons still under investigation, a Volkswagen EOS crashed into the rear of the Jeep. The driver of the Volkswagen was arrested the night of the crash on suspicion of driving under the influence, the CHP said. On Tuesday night, the CHP, which is investigating the crash, identified the suspect as Douglas Guyton, 61. According to San Diego Superior Court documents, this would be Guyton’s fourth DUI arrest in the court’s jurisdiction. The crash was reported around 1 a.m. on the westbound SR-54 transitioning into the southbound Interstate 5 bridge, the California Highway Patrol said. “The Jeep subsequently left the roadway of the connector ramp and landed in the Sweetwater River below, where it became fully submerged,” the CHP said in a release. Juan Gonzalez described seeing the Jeep fly off the freeway ramp, sparks flying, and crash into the water below. He said he attempted to help in rescue efforts, but was stopped by police. “We were attempting to go into the [river], but they were suggesting that we didn’t because of how unsafe it could have been,” Gonzalez said. National City firefighters initiated rescue operations and were able to extricate Monica from the vehicle and bring her to shore. She was pronounced dead shortly after. First responders were unable to extricate her husband, Ignazio, from the vehicle until it was fully pulled out of the water shortly after 4 a.m. Guyton, who is due in court on Wednesday, is expected to face one count of murder and a pair of DUI charges. The CHP is urging anyone who witnessed this crash to please get in touch with the CHP San Diego Area directly at (858) 293-6000. ...read more read less
