INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Indiana State Police are investigating a fatal police shooting in Muncie.
At 5 p.m. Tuesday, Muncie Police Department officers were called to a wellness check at a home in the 300 block of South Ivy Wood Drive. That’s a residential area off of West Westview Boulevard
, about 1.5 miles southwest of IU Health Ball Memorial Hospital.
According to state police, a male at the scene “pointed a handgun at responding officers” before going inside the home and barricading himself.
Over the next few hours, officers made multiple attempts to de-escalate the situation and negotiated with the male in an effort to have him surrender peacefully.
Just before 9 p.m., state police say, officers attempted to deploy tear gas into the house and force the male to exit, “at which time shots were fired.”
The male was transported to IU Health Ball Memorial Hospital, where he was later pronounced deceased.
The identity of the deceased is being withheld until his relatives have been notified.
At the end of the investigation, Indiana State Police investigators will submit their findings to the Delaware County Prosecutor’s Office for review.
No other information was immediately available.
