VCU’s Qatar campus now considered ‘legitimate target’ by Iranian military

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- As the United States and its allies enter week five of war in Iran, the Iranian military now considers all American universities with campuses in the Middle East as “legitimate targets," including Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU).
VCU’s satellite campus in Qat
ar is one of more than a dozen in the region, including Georgetown University, New York University and Carnegie Melon.
This comes after US-Israeli strikes hit two Iranian universities.
The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps wrote on the social platform X Sunday, March 29, that the American universities will be considered targets unless the US condemns the strikes on the Iranian universities and commits to not hitting any more schools.
“Time to go. Pack up immediately," said University of Richmond political science and global studies associate professor Stephen Long.
Long said if he were at one of the American universities in the Middle East, he wouldn’t stick around to watch it play out.
“It doesn’t necessarily mean you need to leave the whole country, but I would definitely be nowhere near any of those university campuses," he said. “[Iran is] more than capable of carrying out attacks on targets in the Middle East. Definitely, universities would be wide open for that type of targeting.”
Iran gave the US until 6 a.m. on Monday, March 30, to meet its demands. The US let the deadline pass. Long said he doesn’t think the US is going to concede to Iran, but that its threats are real.
“Their view is that we opened the door to this by hitting those universities and therefore they are justified in targeting what are 100% civilian locations," Long said. “I would take the threat very seriously and I would expect that they will carry it out.”
Other civilian locations like hotels have also been targeted.
The Iranian government warned all staff and students of the American universities to stay away from their campuses for their safety.
VCU told 8News at the beginning of March that classes at its VCUarts Qatar campus had moved online. As of this reporting, the school had not responded to questions about how many faculty members or students are still in the region.
It’s too early to tell if the US and Israel committed a war crime and intentionally hit the two Iranian universities. Long said the US could say they found the facilities, but that’s for international law to dictate.
Long said best-case scenario is for the war to end in the next five weeks, but believes realistically it will be much longer.
The regime’s newest leader, Mojtaba Khamenei isn't rushing to the negotiation table after his father, former-regime leader Ali Khamenei, mother and wife were killed in US-Israeli strikes. President Donald Trump said negotiations with Iran are going "extremely well," even as more American troops, including 2,500 Marines, are being sent to the Middle East.
