A Long Island teenager faced a judge for the first time Monday after allegedly stabbing his grandmother’s fiancé to death while the man slept inside the couple’s home. The grieving family was looking for answers as 18-year-old Noel Bermudez-Chin was charged in the grisly killing early Saturd ay morning. Prosecutors said around 3:45 a.m., Noel threw a pot of hot oil and hot water on 61-year-old Joseph Falvo, who had been asleep on the living room couch. Noel then stabbed Falvo in the back, neck and chest, killing him, according to investigators. Noel called 911 and told the operator what happened, prosecutors said. He was arrested shortly after. “I only have pain, anger, pain. I’m never going to be okay,” said the teen’s grandmother, Cecilia Bermudez. Her grandson moved into the East Northport home she and Falvo home shared after the teen had trouble at his own home. Bermudez said everyone had gotten along. “I’m never going to be OK because I will never find someone like him. I want to remember him the way he is,” said Bermudez. “He was the father I never had. He was extremely kind, generous,” said Glenda Arroyo, Noel’s mother. Outside court, Noel’s family visibly upset told NBC New York that Noel suffered from mental illness. “He’s been struggling the last couple years since his diagnosis. Unmedicated by his own choice, but I just really want him to get the help that he needs,” said Anthony Ortiz, a relative. The family said Noel and Falvo had a great relationship and they don’t know why he attacked him. The teen was charged with murder. “What the prosecutor said in that arraignment part is not facts. It’s not the case. It’s not the trial. So what we need to remember is he’s presumed innocent,” said Noel’s defense attorney, Peter Mayer. ...read more read less
