Oakley father shoots 5yearold son in chest with AR15

(KRON) -- A 5-year-old Oakley boy is recovering after being accidentally shot in the chest by his father over the weekend. The Oakley Police Department responded at 9:25 p.m. Sunday to the 1700 block of Hemlock Court.
Police said the initial report was that a man had accidentally shot himself while
cleaning his guns. However, while officers were en route, the call was updated to reflect that a 5-year-old boy had been shot in the chest.

Officers arrived at 9:28 p.m. along with the fire department and an ambulance. At the scene, the father was holding the wounded child and applying pressure to the gunshot wound.
The child was transported to the hospital by helicopter. Following surgery, police say he is expected to make a full recovery.

The father was cooperative with police and explained he had been in the process of cleaning an AR-15-style semi-automatic rifle. When he retrieved it from a case, he accidentally pulled the trigger and shot his son in the torso at close range.
The father told police he thought the gun wasn't loaded. Police served a search warrant and removed all firearms from the residence along with several other pieces of evidence.
While police do not at this time believe there was any intent behind the shooting, the incident is under active investigation.
