Richardson police have made two arrests but say they are still searching for additional suspects in a shooting that left a high school senior paralyzed. Investigators say a fight broke out on March 19 during a late-night gathering outside a Waffle House in Richardson. Videos of the chaotic scene — now circulating on social media — are being reviewed by police as they work to identify the gunmen. According to police, a fight escalated into gunfire. One of the bullets struck 18-year-old Seth Thompson, a Richardson High School basketball player set to graduate in May, severing his spinal cord. His father, James Thompson, said his son had rushed in to help a friend, unaware of the danger. “This is your worst fear, that something will happen,” Thompson said. Thompson said his son immediately realized the severity of his injuries. “He knew he was paralyzed before he hit the ground. He said it felt like he was floating,” Thompson said. “He had no mobility; he had no control over his legs.” Seth Thompson has since been released from the ICU. Police have arrested 18-year-old Taylor Griffin and 17-year-old Charles Webster, both facing charges of organized criminal activity. Investigators believe more suspects were involved, some of whom were seen wearing ski masks. Thompson said the suspects were strangers to his son and his friends. “These guys were brandishing guns, and you know, terrorizing people,” Thompson said. While police continue their search, the family is focused on Seth’s future and adjusting to life after the shooting. “It was pretty hard to accept the first couple days,” Thompson said. The hardest part, Thompson said, has been understanding the long-term impact of his son’s injuries. “Well the knowing that he’s never going to walk. He’ll probably never have kids,” Thompson said. A family friend has started a GoFundMe to help with expenses as Seth Thompson begins rehabilitation. Thompson said he is grateful his son survived. “You make sure to tell them you love them, kiss them every time before they leave because you don’t know if they’ll come back,” Thompson said. —— This story was originally reported for broadcast by NBC DFW.
