Interstate 64 Improvements to Begin Soon in Fayette, Scott and Woodford Counties
Mar 27, 2026
Motorists should watch for work zones along nine miles of I-64
LEXINGTON, Ky. (March 27, 2026) — Improvements along nine miles of Interstate 64 in Fayette, Scott and Woodford Counties will soon begin under a $14 million project that includes new blacktop, bridge and drainage repairs, and other up
grades to provide Kentuckians with a safer, smoother ride.
Work will take place along I-64 eastbound and westbound between Midway (Exit 65) and the I-64/I-75 northern split (milepoints 64.8 to 74), and is scheduled for completion by Nov. 1, 2026.
Construction will start next week and in early April with concrete work at bridges. Motorists should expect the following initial traffic changes:
Beginning Monday, March 30, repair work to the Cane Run Road bridge over I-64 will require temporary one-lane traffic on the bridge, controlled by temporary signals or flaggers.
Beginning Tuesday, March 31 at 7 p.m., there will be intermittent lane closures in the slow lane of I-64 westbound starting at milepoint 71 near the northern split and extending through milepoint 64.8.
Concrete work at other bridges and overpasses will require short work zones where one lane of I-64 in each direction will be temporarily closed.
These work zones will move from bridge to bridge and could be in place at multiple bridges as construction progresses. Motorists should watch for merging traffic approaching each work zone.
Later this spring or summer, after bridge work is complete, crews will begin nighttime milling and paving operations in sections of I-64 along the nine-mile corridor.
Paving work will require intermittent lane closures and one-lane traffic each direction, progressing along the project area several miles at a time, with reduced speed limits posted in work zones. Exact dates and times for traffic impacts will be announced in advance
All work and/or closures are scheduled on a tentative basis and are subject to change depending on weather, emergencies and other factors beyond the control of the Department of Highways.
