At least 14 firefighters were hurt during a 3-alarm fire reported Friday morning at a Bronx firehouse, the FDNY said.
The fire was reported around 6 a.m. at Engine 79 on two floors of a two-story firehouse located on Briggs Avenue between East 200 and East 199th streets in the Bedford Park sectio
n.
More than 160 firefighters and EMS personnel responded to the scene of the fire..
In a post on X, the FDNY said that firefighters inside inside the firehouse “encountered fire on the first floor that extended to the apparatus floor and up the stairwell, trapping firefighters on the second floor.”
“Members on the second floor who could not access the stairway did exactly what we ask the public to do, they sheltered in place in a room, closed the door behind them, and waited for assistance. That action bought them time and allowed for their safe removal,” said Fire Commissioner Lillian Bonsignore.
Fourteen firefighters suffered minor injuries and some were taken to area hospitals for evaluation.
Images from the scene showed firefighters on the roof of the firehouse and what appeared to be broken windows throughout the building.
FDNY officials will relocate companies and maintain fire operations in the surrounding neighborhood as the damaged firehouse is repaired.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
