Jerry Lewis, a 67-year-old businessman involved in the massive development project near the United Center, was killed in an apparent assassination earlier this week outside his offices just blocks from the arena, Cook County prosecutors said Friday. Chicago police officers watched Tuesday afternoon as Nassie Mason and Erving Harris jumped out of a stolen Honda parked outside Jerry Lewis' office at 2127 W. Madison St., Assistant State's Attorney Mike Pekara said during a detention hearing. Mason, 28, shot Lewis once in the back of the head. Harris, 31, then stood over Lewis and fired three more rounds, Pekara said. Six cops who were patrolling on Madison saw the two men jump out of the Honda holding latex gloves and witnessed the shooting as they exited their squad cars, Pekara said. Mason and Harris were quickly arrested, and the four shell casings found at the scene matched guns that were recovered, one of which had an extended magazine.Lewis was later pronounced dead at Stroger Hospital, officials said.Surveillance footage showed that Mason and Harris had been waiting outside the office for 90 minutes before the attack. "We have two individuals assassinating the victim as we had police feet away," Pekara told Judge D'Anthony Thedford without offering a motive.Thedford ordered the two defendants held at Cook County Jail.Mason and Harris each face charges of first-degree murder and being a felon in possession of a weapon. The Chicago men have both spent time in prison.Harris has been arrested repeatedly and has twice been convicted in drug cases. He was on parole for a 2018 armed carjacking after being sentenced to 16 years in prison in the case, Pekara said.Mason was sent to prison for 54 months in 2017 after he was convicted of aggravated discharge of a firearm, Pekara said. He got three more years in prison in 2023 when he was found with a loaded gun and a “switch” device that turns handguns into automatic weapons.
