MECKLENBURG COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- A massive fire devastated a Mecklenburg County neighborhood on Thursday, burning through several buildings and killing multiple small animals. On Thursday, March 26, crews from several Mecklenburg fire departments -- including the South Hill Volunteer Fire Departme nt -- were called to a River Ridge neighborhood along Des Laco Trail for report of a large fire. Firefighters found a "rapidly deteriorating environment," with four structures already consumed by fire and others at risk of becoming involved. The flames had further spread to wooded areas, outbuildings, golf carts, lawn mowers, stored outdoor equipment, yard debris and even propane tanks and gasoline containers. "Tight quarters, intense radiant heat, shifting wind and active ember cast created a high‑risk situation for both responders and surrounding properties," South Hill fire officials said. There were also several small explosions, likely caused by household items or outdoor equipment catching fire. All of those involved in tackling this incident acted "quickly and seamlessly" despite all of the challenges such a complicated, dangerous fire presented. This included establishing a unified command early, making sure there was a steady flow of water to the scene despite its rural location and rotating crews to protect firefighters' health. "Their cooperation was a defining factor in preventing the fire from spreading beyond the initial property," South Hill officials said. At this time, the cause of the fire remains under investigation. ...read more read less
