SAN JOSE, Calif. (WISH) — Purdue took down Texas on Trey Kaufman-Renn’s game-winning last-second tip-in, winning 79-77, to advance to the Elite 8. “I mean, it was incredible,” Kaufman-Renn said. “I’m just glad that this team, with all the work that we’ve put in gets an opportuni ty to go back and play in the Elite 8. It’s really special.” Kaufman-Renn finished with a team-high 20 points and 8 rebounds, while shooting 8-10 from the field. As a team, Purdue shot just 4-20 from beyond-the-arc but dominated in the interior. The Boilermakers scored 38 of their 79 points in the paint. The Boilermakers shot 48% from the field as a team. Purdue only turned the ball over 4 times against Texas, their fewest turnovers in a game in the NCAA Tournament this season. Purdue head coach Matt Painter spoke highly on his team’s poise down the stretch. “They’re great, to be in a position where we don’t shoot the basketball well like that from three and be able to grind it out,” Matt Painter said. “That’s something we didn’t know if we’d be able to do three weeks ago. But to win seven straight on a neutral court, these guys have been very resilient. But they showed their experience.” Purdue senior center Oscar Cluff fouled out with 11 seconds left in the game, but credits his team for staying composed. “You could just see the experience kicking in and how composed everyone was,” Oscar Cluff said. “Everyone on the bench was getting fired up, but everyone on the court was composed, and they didn’t rush, didn’t let adrenaline take over and emotions take over.” With the win over Texas, Purdue has now made the Elite 8 in two of the last three seasons. The Boilermakers are now just one win away from making it to Indianapolis for the Final Four. The Boilermakers will play Arizona in the Elite 8 on Saturday. ...read more read less
