Indianapolis outlines Final Four safety measures INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — City leaders on Thursday rolled out their safety plan as tens of thousands are expected to head to downtown Indianapolis for Final Four weekend. “Events like these are only successful as they are safe. We want everyone to have a positive experience next weekend,” said Democratic Mayor Joe Hogsett. About 70,000 people were expected downtown for Final Four weekend, and city leaders said a public safety plan being put in place. Patrick Talty, president of Indiana Sports Corp, said, “Because of their planning, dedication and commitment, we are aligned, and we are ready to host a successful Final Four.” Safety plans include increased patrols of both Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department and Indianapolis Fire Department crews, restricted access points, and visible security measures. IMPD Chief Tanya Terry said, “Our officers will be on foot, on bikes, in patrol cars and monitoring activity through our real-time crime center.” The IMPD chief said although large crowds may raise concerns about targeted attacks in the city, the police department will not limit its presence to just the main event areas. “We’re properly ensuring staffing throughout the city, not just downtown. We’re also in constant communication with our federal partners, and we have no known threats to this particular event.” Signs are already up downtown for the Final Four. Barriers were being placed in key areas to help control traffic and create safer spaces for fans. Daniel Stevenson, deputy director of policy and planning at Indianapolis Department of Public Works, said, “We’re providing barriers and barricades for road closures, specifically for music fest, at Lucas Oil Stadium, and the general downtown area, to help reinforce those road closures.” Officials urged visitors to stay aware of their surroundings and report anything suspicious.
