RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- A 2-year-old boy is recovering at a Richmond hospital after a traumatic lawn mower accident caused him to have part of his leg amputated. The family of 2-year-old Cohen said it's a long road ahead for the boy, who lost his right foot in the accident in Prince George County o n Friday, March 20. Cohen's mom, Brittney Walls, said she was just getting off work that day when she got a text from Cohen's dad for an emergency. "I answered the phone and he said, 'I've ran over Cohen, I've ran over Cohen,'" Walls said. Cohen's dad had been mowing the lawn while the boy and his three siblings played outside. When another sibling ran toward the lawnmower, Walls said Cohen's dad took his foot off the lawnmower's clutch, making it roll backward, onto Cohen. "He thought that he had ran over the gutter, but it was actually our child," Walls said. "All my kids were outside. He obviously acted quickly. I thank God he had a medical background, or I don't know if Cohen would be here today." Cohen was airlifted by helicopter to the Children's Hospital of Richmond. Thankfully, he survived, but he had to have surgery to amputate his right leg above the ankle. "All in all, I see my baby," Walls said. "He's smiling when he's comfortable and he's throwing a ball and he's watching his iPad and he's bored." "He's saying, daddy, I want to go run," Walls said. "I know he knows he needs a foot, but I don't know if he knows to the degree when we get out." Cohen will need a wheelchair and multiple prosthetics a year as he grows. Walls said she and her family want to do whatever they can to make sure he has a normal life. "My almost four-year-old wants to make his brother a foot out of Play-Doh so his brother can run with him," Walls said. "I want him to touch the grass. I want him to live a normal life and have that wheelchair to go on the walks and just try to be that two-year-old." Walls said her family is taking donations through their church, Destination on Oaklawn Blvd., and through a GoFundMe fundraiser. ...read more read less
