The Bay Area has been spared mass deportation efforts like the ones in Los Angeles and Minneapolis. But other enforcement, like the end of protected status, targeted homeland security enforcement, and even student and worker visa changes, resulted in deportations and arrests—sometimes without d ue process. 2.6 million immigrants call California home, with 477,000 of those being undocumented and about 350,000 of those people working, according to the latest Bay Area Council report. Without them, California’s economy would suffer. The report estimates that mass deportation of these workers would cost the Bay Area $67 billion in gross domestic product and would be a major blow to construction, hospitality, caregiving and other services like waste management and transportation.
