Popular Long Island town beach closed due to erosion from storms

A Long Island town’s beach is a popular spot for swimming and for the view. But there won’t be any swimming there this year.
That’s because after a particularly harsh winter, Town Beach in Southold is in need of many repairs.
“Normally we have a lifeguard here all summer long,” said
Southold Town Supervisor Al Krupski. “But we won’t have one this year, we certainly don’t want people climbing this.”
Krupski says years of storms and beach erosion have caused the parking lot at Town Beach to buckle, creating a drop several feet high. When NBC New York visited the beach, chunks of broken asphalt and concrete could be seen on top of moving sand.
“It’s panoramic, I don’t think any part of Long Island has that,” said town resident John Lynch, who frequents the beach. “On a clear day you can see all the way to Connecticut.”
Krupski said people will still be allowed to walk the beach, but parking will be limited. Concrete barriers have been set up along the beachfront and signs will go up next, warning people the beach is closed for swimming.
The beach has shrunk in size since Superstorm Sandy and each storm since has not helped. The town tried sand replenishment in May 2025, but it was not a permanent solution.
“We didn’t even have a storm and it lasted one day,” said Krupski. “One day and it was all gone.”
As the calendar turns to April, officials from the county, state and federal level are expected to meet with town officials to discuss the best way to fix the beach.
Residents are sad that it won’t be business as usual at the beach this summer, but realize it needs to be repaired.
“Well I’m sad,” said Manfred Kuerner, who has visited the beach for 50 years. “It has to be fixed properly. It’s going to cost a lot of money because that’s not an easy job.”
