According to a spokesperson for the Department of Homeland Security, Lopez-Jimenez attempted to flee and resisted law enforcement officers during the encounter. The department stated that the family had an outstanding order for deportation issued by an immigration judge in 2019. The incident has drawn criticism from federal and state lawmakers. U.S. Rep.
