South Dakota State Historical Society awards Deadwood Fund Grants to eight communities

For the Deadwood Fund Grant Spring 2026 cycle, the South Dakota State Historical Society awarded matching grants to historic preservation projects in Lake City, Zeona, Tabor, Custer, Canton, Mitchell, Alcester, and Madison.
These grants are awarded from the Deadwood Fund program, which is funded exc
lusively by a portion of the gaming revenue from the City of Deadwood for the administration of historic preservation projects, as required by state law. The grant program promotes the rehabilitation and restoration of historic properties across South Dakota.
The following projects received a Deadwood Fund Grant for the most recent cycle:
Lake City: Fort Sisseton State Park officer quarters, carpenters shop, and the blacksmith shop received $15,000 to assist in window preservation;
Zeona (Perkins County), Immanuel Lutheran Church, built in 1923, received $5,000 for steeple and roof repair;
Tabor: Saint Wenceslaus Church Rectory, received $10,000 for a porch repair project;
Custer: Camp Bob Marshall cabins, received $15,000 for a roofing repair project;
Canton: Canton Lutheran Church received $15,000 for a stained-glass repair project;
Mitchell: 123 North Main, received $15,000 for structural work;
Alcester: Hyden House, received $10,000 for a roof repair project;
Madison: Smith House received $10,000 for a roof repair project.
“For the past 30 years, this program has served as a great way to encourage restoration or rehabilitation of historic properties across our state,” said Garry Guan, State Historic Preservation Officer. “It is one more way we can promote and preserve our historic and cultural heritage of South Dakota.”
