d Wholesale Grocers (AWG) plans to invest $110 million to modernize its Gulf Coast distribution facility in Pearl River, a move aimed at expanding automation, improving efficiency and strengthening the regional grocery supply chain.
The project, expected to be completed in November 2027, will upgrade the facility’s ambient operations with advanced automation systems designed to improve order accuracy, streamline product handling and support faster, more reliable distribution to independent grocers across the Southeast.
AWG said the investment will reinforce its long-term presence in Louisiana while positioning the Pearl River site as a more resilient hub capable of maintaining operations during severe weather events and periods of high demand.
The company, the nation’s largest cooperative food wholesaler for independently owned supermarkets, serves more than 1,100 member companies and 3,500 locations across 33 states. Its Pearl River facility operates as the Gulf Coast Division Support Center.
The upgrade will also support workforce development efforts, with AWG retaining 334 jobs at the site. Company officials said the positions will continue to offer wages above the St. Tammany Parish average and will evolve alongside increased automation, with more emphasis on technical and skilled roles.
“Associated Wholesale Grocers’ investment demonstrates how technology is strengthening diverse industries in Louisiana, with existing employers continuing to invest in and modernize their operations,” Louisiana Economic Development Secretary Susan B. Bourgeois said.
AWG Executive Vice President of Distribution and Logistics Richard Kearns said the company is reinvesting in its existing operations with support from state and local partners.
“AWG is excited to partner once again with St. Tammany Parish and LED on this exciting new project within our Gulf Coast Division Support Center – our network’s largest conventional grocery division,” Kearns said.
Construction is set to begin in January 2027, with automation installation beginning in April and full operations targeted for November 2027.
Local officials said the investment underscores Pearl River’s role as a growing logistics hub. St. Tammany Parish President Mike Cooper said the project reflects the company’s long-standing partnership with the region, while Pearl River Mayor Joe Lee highlighted its impact on jobs and food distribution reliability.
AWG, headquartered in Kansas, is a member-owned cooperative that also provides supermarket development, real estate services and pharmaceutical distribution support. Company leaders said the modernization will help ensure long-term stability and growth for its Gulf Coast operations.
