Concerns mount after another deadly ebike crash in Bay Area
Mar 23, 2026
The death of another young teen riding an electric bike on the road in the Bay Area is raising concerns, including fortifying traffic laws.
The latest fatal accident took place Thursday in San Jose and follows a similar tragic crash in Half Moon Bay.
“Why are we allowing this to happen?” S
an Mateo County Supervisor Jackie Speier said. “And the real answer is the manufacturers got there first, went to the state legislature and got them to preempt local control and restricted even what the legislature could do.”
Speier said she’s glad to hear the state is working on stricter laws regarding e-bike use.

The county is currently in the process of an ordinance that would require more enforcement of current laws and would create a diversion program for violators.
Speier said the county still has a few more steps to get the new ordinance on the books, but hopes to have it done next month.
Investigators did not release what class the bikes were in the two cases, but Speier points out young people can simply get an app that increases the e-bike speed.
“These bikes are no longer even legal in some respects on our streets and roads that are being ridden by these young people,” Speier said. “And many times without a helmet and deaths have occurred, but they’re tragic and don’t have to happen.”
Meanwhile, a small memorial has been set up in San Jose on Remington Way for the 13-year-old who dided after a solo crash on an e-bike last week. The medical examiner identified the teen as Khang Bui.
The incident follows the death of 16-year-old Cash Justin Krawetz, who died in a collision with a truck on the shoulder of Highway 1.
