MENLO PARK, Calif. (KRON) -- The Menlo Park Police Department is investigating a spike in home burglaries after 14 cases were reported in the affluent community during the first few months of 2026. Officials noted that 13 of those incidents occurred in January and February alone. The frequency of t hese crimes has put the city on track to surpass burglary totals from both 2024 and 2025. Although the local crime rate remains lower than the California state average, the recent activity in one of the nation's wealthiest zip codes has prompted officials to increase patrols. Thieves primarily target high-value items such as jewelry and designer goods. Individual losses in these cases typically range from $10,000 to $40,000. But Menlo Park Police Chief David Norris emphasized that the impact of these burglaries extends beyond financial loss. "The level of fear it can generate is tremendous," Norris said. He noted that the items taken often include "high end jewelry other designer items that have a high resale value." Norris also highlighted the personal nature of these crimes. "They are really emotionally invasive to people... knowing a stranger was in your house going through your things in the home you reside in that can take an emotional toll on folks," Norris said. The department's investigation into the 14 reports suggests that some of the burglaries may involve the same suspects. Investigators have identified a common entry point in many of these cases: the back door. Officials say thieves often enter through the back because residents in the affluent neighborhoods sometimes leave them unlocked while their guard is down. In response to the rising number of reports, the Menlo Park Police Department has increased the number of officers patrolling throughout the area to deter future crimes. Police are also advising residents to take visible preventative measures, such as locking doors in the evening. The department suggests that displaying security company signage or "beware of dog" signs can help ward off potential thieves. Some residents have already begun installing cameras and home security systems in response to the reports. All facts in this report were gathered by journalists employed by KRON4.
