On March 9, 2026, at the Advanced Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation, Jesse Richardson Murphy passed away. He was born on July 1, 1939, in Atlanta, Georgia and lived to be eighty-six years old. He was the eldest of five children, born to James M. Murphy, Sr. and Ollie Mae Taylor.
Jesse atte
nded several elementary schools, Fair Haven Junior High School, and Wilbur Cross High School, where he played in the high school band. Upon leaving high school, he became one of the founding members of the doo-wop group, The Five Satins. Jesse traveled with the group for nearly two years and experienced challenges of the dark side of the music industry. He brought home warnings to his younger brothers to stay away from drugs. Jesse was the last living member of the original group of The Five Satins, where he played piano and sang.
Jesse was a machinist by trade and was employed by several machine shops in and around the New Haven area for over forty-five years. He took some online courses and became a licensed bartender, but never really practiced bartending. Jesse’s hobbies were sports, cooking, Buick cars, and spending time with family and friends.
Left to mourn his passing are his brothers, Lawrence E. Murphy, Sr. (Mary) and James Morris Murphy, Jr.; four sons, Jesse Murphy, Jr. (Michele), Ralph Murphy, Mitchell Murphy (Renee), and Michael Murphy; several grandchildren; one-great grandchild; and a host of nieces and nephews.
Jesse was predeceased by his brother, Raleigh-Joe Taylor; sisters, Anna Mae Huff, Lois Rush, Yvonne Worthington, and Marie Perkins.
The family wishes to thank the following: AB Home Agency, Advanced Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation, and VITAS Healthcare for all their care and support while Jesse was still with us.
