The bar known as GOL began as a Lilliputian Euro grocery in the early aughts, evolved into the hardcore soccer bar 4-4-2 in the 2010s, and has more recently settled into more of a soccer-leaning neighborhood bar with
a devoted cadre of regulars. Sports bars and fine dining rarely go hand-in-hand, but even footie-obsessed locals like to see proper attention paid to their bar food, and that’s very much on the pitch here.
What to order
Unless you’re rocking a white jersey, start with the tomato soup ($10/$13) and upgrade with a grilled cheese ($5). Silky smooth and appreciably tangy, this is pure comfort food for watching an away game on a rainy day.
For a light option with a bit of protein, the chicken Caesar wrap ($12) is hard to beat, with a tangy dressing and a good amount of fresh, crisp vegetation to balance out the heavier pub grub options.
The nachos ($12) are a true game-day centerpiece, served in a hefty earthenware crock with layer upon layer of fried tortilla chips, almost architecturally styled, and loaded with heaping portions of pickled onions and jalapeños.
The vibe
While GOL’s crowd skews Euro sports fans, you don’t need a gap year backpacking through the Ardennes to fit in. It’s very much a local watering hole at heart.
Insider tip
Anyone who follows soccer, especially around World Cup time, knows that international leagues often mean early-morning games. GOL does a solid weekend brunch, with the Red Card Bloody Mary ($12) as a particular standout beverage. It’s a blend of Portland potato and Crater Lake hatch chile vodkas, combined with the bar’s own fermented mix of tomato, hot sauce, and pickled onion. Pair it with a.m. matches, or drink one to repair a celebratory hangover.
