Oklahoma City is set to take a major step toward its next chapter in professional sports as city leaders and the Oklahoma City Thunder prepare to break ground on a new downtown arena later this week. The ceremony, scheduled for 10 a.m. Thursday, March 26, marks the official start of construction on what officials describe as a long-term home for the Thunder—one expected to keep the NBA franchise in Oklahoma City through at least 2053. Planned for the former convention center site at Reno Avenue and Ron Norick Boulevard, the new arena is envisioned as more than just a basketball venue. City leaders have framed the project as a centerpiece for downtown development and a signal of Oklahoma City’s continued growth on the national stage. “This is about the future of Oklahoma City,” Mayor David Holt is expected to emphasize during remarks at the event. He’ll be joined by Thunder Chairman Clay Bennett and lead architect David Manica, whose firm, MANICA Architecture, is leading the design. The project brings together a slate of high-profile partners. TVS is serving as architect of record, while Flintco and Mortenson are overseeing construction. While renderings have already offered a glimpse of the arena’s sleek, modern design, Thursday’s groundbreaking represents the first visible step in turning those plans into reality. The event itself will include remarks, a ceremonial photo opportunity and media availability following the program. For those not attending in person, the ceremony will be streamed live on the Thunder’s YouTube channel. As shovels hit the ground, the moment will serve as both a milestone and a message: the Thunder aren’t just staying in Oklahoma City—they’re building something meant to last.
