A 15-year-old girl was killed and a 13-year-old girl was injured after a driver slammed into the electric scooter they were riding in the South Shore neighborhood Saturday night, Chicago police said. A witness to the crash flagged down police and told them a car hit the right side of the e-scooter c arrying Violet Harris and the younger girl about 8:30 p.m. in the 2800 block of East 77th Street, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office and a police report obtained by the Sun-Times.Violet, unresponsive in the street, was taken by ambulance to the University of Chicago Medical Center with severe head and chest injuries. She was pronounced dead within the hour, authorities said. The girl driving the scooter got up after the crash and walked west on 77th Street to Jackson Park Hospital. Suffering from lacerations, she was transferred to the University of Chicago.Surveillance video captured the crash, showing the car hitting them and continuing south along South Exchange Avenue, the report said.An autopsy Sunday didn't rule on the cause or manner of Violet's death, with final rulings pending further investigation.A GoFundMe set up by Violet’s mother said she was an honors student at Hyde Park Academy who "filled the room with smiles when she walked in and brought so much joy to everyone she came in contact with."
