Police increasing presence across Central Virginia to deter weekend ‘teen takeovers’
Mar 20, 2026
HANOVER COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- Law enforcement in multiple Central Virginia jurisdictions say they will be increasing their presence ahead of 'teen takeovers' advertised on social media.
Hanover County's Sheriff's Office and Chesterfield County Police said they will be out in full force at local mal
ls and amusement parks to deter chaos this weekend. This comes after a so-called teen takeover caused Short Pump Town Center to close early on March 14.
Sgt. Steve Wills with Hanover County's Sheriff's Office said this was prompted by flyers and social media posts promoting a takeover at King's Dominion's opening weekend.
"People need to be held accountable, and that's what we plan to do this weekend," Wills said.
Wills said he doesn't want to deter people from coming to Hanover and the park and having a good time. The problem is when the takeovers turn into fights, like what police reported at Short Pump. There were also reports of gunshots, which police said were unfounded, but still caused widespread alarm.
"That causes a lot of panic and a lot of chaos, a lot of running, screaming, stampeding things of that nature and inadvertent injuries to people and bystanders," Wills said. "Some of which are very innocent and aren't there to be a part of that type of activity."
Wills said the department will have an increased presence at King's Dominion and the surrounding area. The park also has a new chaperone policy in place: anyone 17 and younger must be accompanied by an adult at least 21 years old, and that person can be with no more than 5 guests a day.
"Come out and see us and have fun. But if you're coming here to cause a problem, just know we are going to be there," Wills said. "We're going to be there in presence. We're not there to provoke you. We're certainly not trying to spread that message or intimidate anybody or, spread any sort of fear amongst these kids that are coming out."
"But just know we are prepared," Wills said. "And if we are provoked, we're going to act very swiftly and we're going to eliminate the problem. We're going to get you out of the park and we're going to move you."
Chesterfield Police had a similar message in a statement released March 19. This came after police heard concerns of a takeover at Chesterfield Town Center.
"I would ask at this time that if you have a desire to come to the Chesterville Town Center and patronize a business, we'll be there to support you," said Police Chief Col. Frank Carpenter in a video posted by the department. "But if you come with a desire to create disruption and break the law, we'll be there to address those issues as well.”
Officers are calling for parents to get more involved to prevent issues.
"If you have plans to drop your kid off or take your child to King's Dominion this weekend, I highly recommend, talk to them about this before you drop them off, before you come up there with them," Wills said. "Have those conversations first and re-instill in them they need to be responsible, make good decisions."
