Eight city crossing guards resigned from their jobs over the past five months — leaving four of the city’s 50 crossing-guard positions currently vacant. Those resignations were recorded in the city’s March 6 personnel report. The eight crossing/safety guards included in the report depa rted from their roles between Sept. 29, 2025, and March 5, 2026. New Haven Public School (NHPS) spokesperson Justin Harmon said the recent turnover is not unusual during the winter and has not been impacting the school district directly because the city maintains floater staff for these situations. He explained that the city has a total of 50 crossing guard positions; most work to support the schools. Harmon said four of those 50 positions are now vacant. “The city is currently interviewing several candidates and hopes to be able to fill these positions soon,” he said. “The resignations shown in the personnel report occurred over a span of five months,” Harmon continued. “The total included a retirement, and some staff turnover during colder months is not unusual in this line of work. The city plans for this possibility by maintaining floater staff so that schools are not negatively affected when a crossing guard leaves.” Harmon concluded by emphasizing the importance of the role. “Guards help ensure safe commutes for our students and protect students who may be put at risk if vehicles fail to comply with traffic signs and signals,” he said.
