‘Stop the AI Race’ protest planned for Saturday in SF

SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) -- A protest planned for Saturday in San Francisco will call on the leaders of the city's leading artificial intelligence firms to commit to pausing development of the technology. Protesters plan to march to three of the top AI companies in San Francisco -- and the industry as a
whole -- Anthropic, OpenAI and xAI.
The "Stop the AI Race" protest is calling on the respective CEOs of the companies -- Dario Amodei, Sam Altman, and Elon Musk -- to agree to a conditional global pause on AI development.

Organizers of the protest cited previous instances of AI CEOs like Demis Hassabis of Google DeepMind and Amodei saying they would be open to pausing -- if other labs did the same. However, they say that Anthropic has already gone back on its commitment to pause on development if AI became too dangerous and that its leading competitor, OpenAI, has also been weakening safety commitments as it transitions out of being a nonprofit.
"So on March 21st we'll be asking Dario Amodei (CEO of Anthropic), Sam Altman (CEO of OpenAI), and Elon Musk (CEO of xAI) to make a public statement: would you pause if every other major AI company in the world pauses?" the protest organizers website reads.
Saturday's protest gets underway at noon with a rally and speeches outside Anthropic's headquarters on Howard Street, following by a march to OpenAI and a walk to xAI. It will conclude with a walk to Dolores Park where a celebration will be held.
Organizers are calling for a peaceful and nonviolent march.
