Cracking cold cases to catch a killer has become more common, but figuring out an unidentified victim is much more complicated. But thanks to a North Bay genetic sleuth and breakthrough DNA analysis, the Newark Police Department is hoping to name a Jane Doe. The victim’s remains were found in a Newark field in 1985. Newark PD picked the case two years ago. With little evidence to go on, the police department turned to the DNA Doe Project based in Sebastopol, which is a volunteer-run nonprofit specializing in genetic genealogy, the marriage of DNA analysis and old-fashion family tree records.
