HOSFORD-ABERNETHY – Tapas and paella eatery Vya opened its doors on February 26, filling the space at 959 Southeast Division Street previously occupied by Palomar. It’s the latest venture from Vy and Steve Chao, the duo behind Doja Tea and Alma. The modern tav
erna invites diners to linger over jamon croquettes, gilda skewers, and oxtail empanadas, and giant pans of seafood or vegan paella, accompanied by sangria and cocktails. 959 SE Division St #100, Portland.
BUCKMAN – For a short time only, Kann’s downstairs bar, sousòl, is hosting a residency from “king of BBQ” pit master extraordinaire Bryan Furman, along with his mother Almeta and son Nas. On Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays from 1 p.m. (12 p.m. on Fridays) until 8 p.m. or sold out, the trio slings barbecue staples like ribs and chicken, as well as sides like collard greens, corn bread, and mac and cheese. This is a hot ticket, so you’ll likely have to queue for in-person dining, but to-go family platters can be preordered on Resy. The residency kicked off on January 30, and is slated to last just three months through April, so don’t delay. 227 SE 6th Ave, Portland.
HOSFORD-ABERNETHY – Another addition to the Hosford-Abernethy area: as of early March, Rangoon Bistro opened the doors to its new home in the former Deadshot space at 2133 Southeast 11th Avenue. The move from its original Southeast 50th location marks a new chapter for the beloved Burmese restaurant, with extra space and an improved cocktail list courtesy of the Tulip Shop Tavern beverage team. 2133 SE 11th Avenue, Portland.
VERNON – Ponto, a new spot slinging the latest pastry it girl, Korean salt bread, first debuted at the end of February, with a grand opening on March 4. Portland got so excited and sold out the bakery so many times that owner Saerom Chang announced on March 7 that the opening is on pause to take a “little time to reorganize, grow our team, and put a few stronger systems in place so we can serve you the way we truly want to.” No reopening date has been shared as of March 16, so check ponto.pdx on Instagram for updates. 1483 NE Alberta St, Portland.
KENTON – The Dreamweaver Group debuted its new bar, Speakeasy Saloon, in the Kenton neighborhood on March 6. The laid-back watering hole fills the space of Parkside Bar Bistro; expect smash burgers and tenderloin, alongside cocktails. The saloon will also be launching late-night “prohibition hours” where it will turn into a speakeasy. 2135 N Willis Blvd, Portland.
DOWNTOWN – Sports fans have a new spot to watch games in style at Honorable Mention, a swanky high-end sports bar and lounge in the basement of the Benson Hotel. The new venture, which opened on Friday, March 6, comes courtesy of a suite of buzzy big-name owners, including Portland Trail Blazers point guard Damian Lillard and JR Duperrier (a partner at Janken). Food-wise, there are stylish small bites like beet deviled eggs and mini lobster rolls, pizza, and fried chicken, with beer, wine, cocktails, and “free throw” shots on the drinks side. 309 SW Broadway, Portland.
SELLWOOD-MORELAND – Portlanders in search of a New York slice have a new spot to try with Dick’s, a fresh pizzeria that opened its doors in the old Sunny’s Pizza location on March 12. The 1905’s Chris Pfeifer is behind the spot, with chef Jon Wiley, who runs the jazz club’s partner restaurant, Scorfana, heading up the kitchen. Menu-wise, Dick’s is keeping things simple with slices and full pies, as well as salads, cocktails, and beer. 7738 SE 13th St, Portland.
SLABTOWN – As of March 19, Northwest Portland has a new neighbor in Lansdowne Social, the communal supper club, which is opening in the Slabtown area after spending its inaugural year in Northeast. Helmed by Quaintrelle alums Martin Pfeifer and Owen Perry, its tasting menus will return, along with à la carte dishes, like scallops with blonde romesco and butternut squash cappellachi, all focused on celebrating Pacific Northwest bounty. The afternoon tea service won’t be making the trip across the river, though; for that, diners can return to Doja Tea Room at 518 Northeast 28th. 1639 NW Marshall Street, Portland.
