(KRON) -- Amid recent allegations against Cesar Chavez, debate has arisen on whether to continue observing anything associated with the civil rights icon, including the annual holiday that falls on his March 31 birthday. Santa Clara County has announced it will continue to observe March 31 as an of ficial holiday. San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan said Cesar Chavez Day events will be cancelled this March. Mahan added that his office will initiate processes to review locations associated with Chavez. San Francisco District 9 Supervisor Jackie Fielder said she will support community efforts to take down Chavez's name from any institutions in her district. KRON4 is unaware of any formal effort underway to rename the roadway at this time. In the East Bay, Contra Costa County rescheduled its 32nd Annual Cesar E. Chavez Commemorative Celebration to no longer correspond with the March 31 holiday dedicated to Chavez. Cesar Chavez Day was declared a state holiday in 2000 and made a federal holiday in 2014. ...read more read less
