Heat wave impacting Lake Tahoe ski season

(KRON) -- The heat is taking a toll on ski resorts around Lake Tahoe, and ski pass holders are wondering how much longer the ski season will last.
Skiers and snowboarders sported T-shirts at Heavenly resort in 60-degree temperatures Wednesday. Cole Zimmerman of Heavenly says most of the ski trails
are staying open, but the resort had to close runs at lower elevations this week.
Three Vail resorts in the Tahoe region plan on sticking with their planned closing dates: April 12 for Northstar California, and April 19 for Kirkwood Ski Resort and Heavenly.

“Just assessing conditions, taking a look at what is safe to ski, what’s good to ski still ... we’re super confident that we are going to be able to get to our April 19 date that we’ve had planned," Zimmerman said.
Business owners in the region keep a close eye on the weather and its impacts on tourism. Ryn Muat, a spokesperson for Visit Lake Tahoe, says mountain destinations are always challenging.
“People want the snow, but if we get to much at the wrong time, it can also be difficult,” said Muat. “So we have to just be resilient as a community.”
Muat says ski resorts would be negatively impacted by a lack of snow and shorter ski season, but that other industries have diversified options to keep people coming year-round.
“Regardless of what kind of season we have, we’re ready to start moving to the next one and let people know that there’s still lots to do here in the spring and it’s a beautiful time to visit,” said Muat.
Despite a lack of new snow, Muat says Lake Tahoe still had a better snow year compared to parts of Colorado and Utah.
As a week-long, unprecedented March heat wave stretches into its third day, temperature records across the Bay Area are continuing to fall. Monday was the first day of the early season heat spike and nearly half a dozen temperature records were broken. A heat advisory remains in effect for the Bay Area and the Central Coast this week through Friday.
